Couple of things that I know and that may work:

- Decimation Algorithms, initially designed to reduce the Gazillion
of Polys created by CAT/MRI reconstructed models, these may be useful
for reducing the number of Polys used within a model. The starting
point could SIGGRAPH'92, where such an Algorithms is outlined.

- Use Level-Of-Detail for visualization. I think it has been hardware
encoded on the new Onyx InfiniteReality, thus very cheap to use.

- Much better, use an algorithm that is relying on an evaluated form
of your surfaces to create a tessellation appropriate to the current
position, but it is going to be really computationally expensive.

I don't know if I really answer any of your question though....
