CRCG Announces New Digital Watermarking Service on the Web

(Providence, Rhode Island.) The Fraunhofer Center for Research in
Computer Graphics (CRCG) announces the establishment of the SysCoP(tm)
World-Wide-Web digital watermarking service. The service will be
available free for a limited time only beginning October 1, 1996, at
http://www.crcg.edu/syscop . SysCoP(tm)

SysCoP(tm) (System for Copyright Protection) is a digital media
labeling tool that allows the information provider to embed a robust
and invisible copyright label in structured text, image, audio, or
video data. The labeling technique discourages misuse of digital
media by making the media traceable and by providing evidence of
alteration. The embedded copyright label is undetectable. It also
cannot be removed or altered without destroying the appearance or
utility of the original medium.

SysCoP(tm) can be applied to all areas where data protection,
security, or intellectual property rights protections are needed. The
most applicable field is on-line or off-line electronic publishing,
from electronic newspapers (magazines) to portable medium (CDs,
CD-ROMs, CD-Is). SysCoP(tm) is also useful in the fields of medical
imaging, electronic commerce, broadcast services, and law enforcement.
For example, SysCoP(tm) could provide the authentication necessary for
establishing chain-of-custody for forensic evidence in criminal
cases. Digital Media

The SysCoP(tm) system currently works with still image, audio files,
motion data, and structured text documents. For still images, it
reads PPM (PGM, PBM) formats directly and uses a conversion tool-kit
to support JPEG, GIF, and TIFF formats. For structured text
documents, SysCoP(tm) works on PostScript(tm) files produced by
Microsoft Word for Windows(tm). JPEG and MPEG-1 encoded motion data
can also be watermarked with SysCoP(tm). Several audio file formats
are supported.

Netscape Navigator(tm) Plug-in

CRCG is also developing a SysCoP(tm) plug-in technology for Netscape
Navigator(tm), Photoshop(tm), and digital cameras. Combined with an
image encryption tool available from CRCG, a new SysCoP(tm) module
will allow digital watermarking to be added at the source; e.g.,
directly from Photoshop(tm) and digital cameras. The plug-in for
Netscape Navigator(tm) will enable digital information to be marked
and then traced as it moves around the Web.
