Subject: JOB-OFFERED: RESEARCH ENGINEER Date: Fri, 11 Apr 1997 15:42:00 EST Message-ID: <199704111948.AB10115@medlantic.mhg.edu> POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT FULL-TIME Research Engineer Dear Readers, The National Rehabilitation Hospital's Assistive Technology/Rehabilitation Engineering Program has a full-time Research Engineer position available for a qualified person interested in exploring promising technologies that can be transferred from military and space agencies to civilian use that will benefit persons with disabilities. The appointee will be required to provide research assistance to NRH clinical staff, patients, and grant personnel at the Assistive Technology Research Center (ATRC) at NRH. The recently created Center is the result of a four-year grant from the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materials Command (DoD). The primary goal of the ATRC is to identify promising military and aerospace technologies that may have application to rehabilitation medicine, and the everyday lives of persons with disabilities, and to perform research that will help facilitate the transfer of that technology into the private sector. The ATRC has state-of-the art facilities for conducting Human Computer Interface (HCI) / human performance measurement research. The Center is equipped with SGI workstations, VR software and peripherals such as the VR4 HMD, CrystalEyes, Flock of Birds, and CyberGloves, as well as eye-tracking systems. In addition, ATRC personnel have access to equipment in the Performance Diagnostic Laboratory including a 4-camera VICON motion analysis system, telemetered EMG, and twin AMTI force plates. The center also has several computers equipped with data acquisition hardware and software from various manufacturers. Research at the ATRC includes Virtual Reality/HCI, human movement quantification, the use of intelligent agents in diagnosis, sensors, materials, as well as the development of innovative manufacturing techniques for orthotics. Qualifications include an advanced degree, Masters or PhD (preferred) in electrical, mechanical, or biomedical engineering. Three or more years of experience and applications of rehabilitation technology are desired, and experience with Virtual Reality technologies preferred. The applicant should also have research experience and will be expected to assist in producing and submitting research articles for publication; assist in preparing and presenting scientific papers at conferences; and assist in developing grants for possible external funding. Salary will commensurate with qualifications with a range of $37,000 to $45,000.
