Syracuse University is "reaching out" to other institutions involved with 
virtual reality research on a multi-city pre-SIG/GRAPH tour.

Mike Nilan, professor in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse 
University, will be visiting MIT's Media Lab (July 24-26), the U. of North 
Carolina at Chapel Hill (July 27-28) and the Human Interface Technology 
Laboratory at Seattle (August 2-8).

In conjunction with the emergence of Virtual Reality at Syracuse University, 
we are interested in facilitating the coordination of academic, private, and 
government institutions working in this area.

We are currently talking with Rome Labs, the IBM Multimedia group, 
Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, Hewlett Packard, Apple, DEC, and 
NCSA to develop possibilities for collaborative work in VR. We have 
already developed relationships with Cornell University, Rochester Institute 
of Technology, Rensseler Institute of Technology, Abrams/Gentile 
Entertainment (AGE), SUNY Buffalo, and SUNY ESF.

We are particularly interested in application and usability issues for VR, as 
opposed to a technology-based approach. By combining a focus on users 
with existing foci on technology, we aim for more effective use of VR 
technology for the future. 

Mike Nilan and Greg Newby will be at the ACM SIG/GRAPH meeting in 
Las Vegas at the end of July. We are very interested in speaking with 
researchers, industry and government representatives, students, and others 
working in Virtual Reality.
