<<<Question 1>>>
In France, there is a new service which uses V.27ter standard. Does ZyXEL
support this feature?

<<<Answer 1>>>
ZyXEL modem (U-1496S+/U-1496R/U-1496R+) supports V.27bis mode only. V.27bis is
for 4-wire leased line application, and can not be used in 2-wire dial-up line
(ordinary PSTN network). But in fax mode, ZyXEL modem (all models) supports
V.27ter standard.

<<<Question 2>>>
Is the TX power level adjustable in dial-up line application?

<<<Answer 2>>>
Generally the dial-up line Tx power level is fixed. It is not adjustable because
it violates the PTT rules. But in some countries, the PTT allows users to
adjust the TX power level. So check your local telephone company for
availability. If you are allowed to do so, with special firmware you can use
AT*Pn command to adjust modem's TX power level (the same as leased line).

In leased line application, you can use *Pn command to adjust the TX power level
(from 0 dBm to -15 dBm). Simply set S38.3=1 to extend the leased line Tx power
level from -12 dBm to -27 dBm.

<<<Question 3>>>
Is it impossible to make the response time on recieving DTMF adjustable?

<<<Answer 3>>>
It is impossible to make the response time on recieving DTMF adjustable.

<<<Question 4>>>
Does Zfax support compressed TIFF format?

<<<Answer 4>>>
Yes. Zfax supports compressed TIFF format.

<<<Question 5>>>
Why LED "OH" is always ON while modem is powered up?

<<<Answer 5>>>
The modem may be set on leased line mode. On leased line mode the modem will
off-hook and try connection whenever powered up. Use front panel LCD menu to
change to power up from a profile not with leased line setting.

User also could restart the modem by holding down the "ENTER" key (down arrow
key) while powering up the modem. In U-1496E/U-1496E+, press DATA/VOICE key on
front panel when modem is powered on then release DATA/VOICE key a few seconds
later, modem will enter self-test mode, then press DATA/VOICE key or cycle power
modem once again.

<<<Question 6>>>
When U-1469P connects with a U-1496E, with a normal telephone line it connects
at the speed of 16.800 and it works really fine, but with a cellular phone
(Microtak Motorola) we were connected only at the very low speed of 7200 bps
during file transfer (400/600 cps) with ZMmodem. Why?

<<<Answer 6>>>
U-1496P can be used in both land office (ordinary telephone line or leased line)
and automobile (cellular network). But if you want to use your U-1496P in
cellular network, it is better to enable CELL mode on both sites (remote modem
and local modem), otherwise cellular mode will not take effect. In other words,
if you just enable CELL mode in U-1496P (the other site is U-1496E without CELL
mode), the modem will connect with ordinary data mode only, like ZyX 16800,
V.32bis /V.32...

<<<Question 7>>>
Will CELL mode (cellular) be available with the other stand alone models?

<<<Answer 7>>>
The E, E+ and S+ (LCD) models with V6.11a firmware don't support cellular
mode. The new firmware V6.12 includes cellular feature.

<<<Question 8>>>
Does U-1496P have the flash EPROMs? How to upgrade the firmware?

<<<Answer 8>>>
Yes, the U-1496P comes with flash EPROM. If you want to upgrade your firmware,
you just need to remove your flash EPROM from modem, and burn it by EPROM
programmer (almost the same as oridinary EPROM, but you don't need to erase the
EPROM). ZyXEL's new generation products will support a more convenient and
fancier method to upgrade the firmware (the user does not need to burn EPROMs).

<<<Question 9>>>
How must I do to enable CELL mode in U-1496P ?

<<<Answer 9>>>
Please refer to S49 bit 7, &N42 to &N46 and S49 bit 0 to bit 3 (&N0 also
includes CELL mode, but wes uggest you to select the dedicated CELL mode if the
modem is used in cellular network). S43.2=1 (S43 bit 2 is enabled) can be used
to enable auto transmit power level adjustment (factory default is disabled). Or
refer to chapter 13 CELLULAR MODE OPERATION in U-1496 Series User's Manual Rev.
2.2.

<<<Question 10>>>
How to use V.26bis mode in ZyXEL modem?

<<<Answer 10>>>
In general case, V.26bis is used in sync. mode.

ZyXEL V.26bis mode settings: &D2 &N11 &R0 &M3 (for E/E+, &M1 is suggested)
                             S0=01 S20=0B (hex) S26=0F(hex) S39=20(hex)

User has to drop DTR to finish a V.26bis connection session, otherwise V.26bis
mode will keep the connection (handshake with its own echo) even if you power
OFF one of the modems. Actually, carrier can not be detected on-line except in
data transmission circumstance.

<<<Question 11>>>
How to listen a stored voice message on Sound Blaster card?

<<<Answer 11>>>
In ZFAX V3.01, copy the driver CTVDSK.DRV in Sound Blaster software to the ZFAX
working path. Except that if you use ZFAX V3.10 or later, you need not copy the
driver to ZFAX working path.

<<<Question 12>>>
When recording the voice in Sound Blaster .WAV format, then using the utility
WAV2VOC.EXE to conver to .VOC format, then using VCNVT.EXE to convert the voice
file to ADPCM format. When playing the recoded voice message on the modem, there
is no legible sound.

<<<Answer 12>>>
Genarally, the default sampling rate of Sound Blaster card is around 11 KHz, but
for ZyXEL modem, the voice sampling rate is 9.6 KHz only. In this circumstance,
if you convert .WAV format to .VOC format, there will be some problems.

Try to configure Soud Blaster card's sampling rate to 9.6 KHz.

<<<Question 13>>>
When using SuperVoice V1.0.04 to record voice message with ZyXEL modem(s) V6.11a
firmware, SuperVoice reports a problem caused from invalid modem response. Why?

<<<Answer 13>>>
There is exactly a problem with SuperVoice V1.0.04 and ZyXEL V6.11a firmware in
voice application. But SuperVoice V1.0.6 has fixed this problem. SV1006-1.ZIP
andSV1006-2.ZIP (SuperVoice V1.0.6) are placed at file area 3 of ZyXEL BBS.
