Yes. As ZyXEL ISDN modem includes normal modem function,if any traditional modem
calls from analog telephone line (PSTN), ZyXEL ISDN modem
will connect it with normal modem mode. This feature is also called "backward
compatible".

Yes. ZyXEL will use proprietary COM and LPT port in the coming new V.34 modem
and ISDN modem. ZyXEL is working on a FOSSIL driver for DOS and a virtual
device driver for Windows.

Please try the following settings on both local and remote site modems:

    AT&FS15=9
    S15=9      bit (1, 0) = (0, 1) and bit (4, 3) = (0, 1)
               Odd parity and 11 character length

Note: Please make sure the terminal program is in O, 8, 1 mode when issuing
      ATD <phone_number> dialing command.

Is it possible to have a U-1496RN and a U-1496R+ in the same rack and still
have management control of all the modems in the rack???

Yes, but all modems on the rack will be considered as R or R+ models (non-NMS
version). All modems can be controlled and monitored by the NMS, but the NMS
can not go through the modem link's secondary channel to control and monitor
the remote modems.

            remote control.

When the modem is used to be dialed in from a remote site, the modem rings but
never answers the incoming call, why???

Generally, different country comes with different tone specification, such as
dial tone, ring tone, busy tone etc.. The user needs to purchase modem with
appropriate hardware version and firmware version in order to work properly. In
normal case (with approciate h/w and f/w), not only ring signals can be heard,
but the modem's AA LED will flash when the ring signals come in. The modem will
answer the call if auto-answer and/or ring counter (S1 register) is programmed
so or an ATA command is received from the DTE. There may be cases the computer/
terminal does not raise the DTR RS232 signal. Check to see if the computer does
assert the DTR signal.

As ISDN can identify an incoming call (data/voice), is there a possibility to
redirect the call to a phone connected to the ISDN modem???

For ISDN to ISDN, it's no problem. The caller can specify the sub-address to
select the services. But for PSTN to ISDN, because the traditional PSTN doesn't
provide sufficient call control and signaling message, the ISDN can not
identify exactly what the incoming call is. The call on B channel could be
voice call or fax call or even data call, except you apply multiple subscriber
number service and specify the application of each subscriber number. For
instance, when a user makes a PSTN data call to ISDN, the ISDN TA will setup a
B channel service and redirect the incoming call to A/B adapter. There could be
an analog telephone or fax/modem connection to A/B adapter. If the user has
multiple subscriber number service, he can specify one number for voice
application, another for fax/data application.

Why in some PBX systems the call transfer function in ZFAX is workable, but
some not???

Different PBX may use different approach to transfer calls. Most of the PBXs
transfer calls by shorting Tip and Ring (hookflash) to transfer calls. In this
case, the call transfer function of ZFAX will work. Some PBXs use a third EARTH
wire to do the call transfer function, unless you do a hardware modification
on the modem, the ZFAX call transfer function will not work in this case.
